Ask the Experts: Charles L. Saltzman, MD, and Florian Nickisch, MD

Charles L. Saltzman, MD, is the LS Peery MD Presidential Endowed Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah. Focused on improving physical function of patients with limited mobility, Dr. Saltzman has helped develop new methods for treatment of ankle arthritis (ankle fusion and ankle replacement), midfoot arthritis, ankle & hindfoot arthroscopy, and forefoot problems. Dr. Saltzman is the Editor-in-Chief of Foot & Ankle International and Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics. He has also served as a Co-Editor of the premier textbook Mann's Surgery of Foot and Ankle, President of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, President of the International Federation of Foot & Ankle Societies, President of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, and Vice President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Florian Nickisch, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah. His clinical interests include acute and subacute traumatic injuries to the foot and ankle (Achilles Tendon ruptures, calcaneus fractures, talus fractures, midfoot fractures, and fracture dislocations), reconstructive surgery, and sports injuries. Dr. Nickisch completed fellowships in Orthopaedic Trauma at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, and in Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgery at the OL Miller Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition, he was a visiting fellow at the Sigvard T. Hansen Foot & Ankle Institute at the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. His research interests include the anatomy of complex foot and ankle deformities, post-traumatic arthritis of the foot and ankle, and surgical outcomes research.
