UConn Health Surgeon Honored with Award Recognizing Women in Foot and Ankle Orthopaedics
Rosemont, Ill. (May 12, 2022) - Foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon Lauren E. Geaney, MD, from Farmington, Connecticut, was named the 2022 Career Development Award recipient from the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society® (AOFAS). One of two Women’s Leadership Awards presented by the Foundation, the Career Development Award supports the professional aspirations of early- and mid-career female orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons.
Dr. Geaney currently serves as assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery and residency program director at the University of Connecticut (UConn) Musculoskeletal Institute at UConn Health. She completed her medical degree and orthopaedic residency at UConn, followed by a foot and ankle fellowship at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Geaney has been actively involved in AOFAS for more than a decade. She has held several leadership and committee positions within the Society, including current vice chair of the Education Committee, member of the Young Physicians Committee, co-chair and presenter for AOFAS educational programs, and reviewer for Foot & Ankle International, the official journal of AOFAS.
"I continue to be impressed when Lauren takes the stage," said foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon A. Holly Johnson, MD, from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. "She has a commanding yet approachable presence at the podium, capturing the audience's attention while making a strong point clearly."
The Women’s Leadership Awards are presented as part of the AOFAS Women’s Leadership Initiative, established in 2018 to support and encourage women in foot and ankle orthopaedic surgery. Funding for the Women's Leadership Initiative is provided by the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation, supported by a grant from Treace Medical Concepts, Inc.
"I’m so humbled and proud to be considered for this award amongst such amazing women in the AOFAS who are my role models and inspiration," said Dr. Geaney. "As we celebrate female leaders in orthopaedics and within our Society, we can continue to inspire our female colleagues to achieve greatness and elevate our profession beyond what we’ve ever done before."
