AOFAS Traveling Fellowship Awards Program

The Traveling Fellowship Awards program is open to AOFAS Active Members, Associate Members - Osteopathic, Candidate Members, and International Members who are 45 years old or younger.  Five members are chosen annually to travel to visit leaders in foot and ankle education and research. A goal of the Traveling Fellowship Awards Program is to spur new thinking about orthopaedic foot and ankle care and research. Traveling Fellows are required to present a summary of their findings at the Annual Summer Meeting and through an article in an AOFAS publication.

The AOFAS Traveling Fellowship Awards Program is funded by the Outreach & Education Fund with a grant from DJO Incorporated.

2009 Traveling Fellows

The names of the 2009 AOFAS Traveling Fellows were announced at the AOFAS Specialty Day Program in Las Vegas. Thomas H. Lee, MD, chair of the Outreach & Education Fund, made the announcement of this year’s participants. “The AOFAS is thrilled with the number and quality of the many applicants who applied for this excellent program and is delighted to be able to offer this fellowship to the five successful candidates. They should have an outstanding experience. We thank DJO Incorporated for their continuous support of this endeavor.”

The 2008 Traveling Fellows began their visit by attending the AOFAS 24th Annual Summer Meeting and Pre-meeting Course in Denver. They traveled together for 2 1/2 weeks and visited AOFAS members in their teaching and research practices in Chicago, Toronto, Columbus, Houston and Dallas. In these locations, AOFAS point hosts organized educational and social activities for the Traveling Fellows and AOFAS members in the area.  This year’s point hosts included: Denver local hosts Edward Bruck, MD, David Kim, MD, and Edward Pino, MD; Chicago point host Brian Toolan, MD; Toronto point host Johnny Lau, MD; Columbus hosts Gregory Berlet, MD, Thomas Lee, MD, and Terry Philbin, DO; Houston point hosts Thomas Clanton, MD and William McGarvey, MD; and in Dallas, James Brodsky, MD and John Early, MD. The trip began in Denver on June 23 and concluded in Dallas on July 16, 2008.

"The Traveling Fellows began by attending the AOFAS 23rd Annual Summer Meeting and Pre-Meeting course in Toronto, July 12-15, 2007," said Judy Baumhauer, MD, 2007 chair of the AOFAS Traveling Fellowship Awards Committee, which selected the recipients. They traveled together for 2 1/2 weeks and visited AOFAS members in their teaching and research practices in Rochester, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore/Washington, DC.

The 2006 Traveling Fellows attended the AOFAS Summer Meeting and the Pre-Meeting Course on Sports Injuries of the Foot and Ankle in July 2006 in La Jolla, Calif. Following the meeting, they visited AOFAS members at their teaching and research practices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver.
