The AOFAS is an organizational partner with Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the availability and quality of health care in developing countries around the world. HVO's work through volunteer training and educational programs supports the mission of the AOFAS Outreach & Education Fund (OEF) to promote education and service in the area of foot and ankle.
Volunteering in Uganda with HVO and AOFAS
AOFAS members, working in collaboration with HVO, have volunteered in Uganda with a goal of improving foot and ankle care through education and training of the orthopaedic residents at Mulago Hospital in the capital city of Kampala. Mulago Hospital is a 2,000 bed public facility with a developing orthopaedic residency program. Orthopaedics was introduced to Uganda in 1991, and .HVO has had a presence in Kampala for a number of years. In 2008 it was reported that the country had 20 orthopaedic surgeons for its population of 30 million people. English is the official language of Uganda.
