Baltimore Orthopaedic Surgeon to Lead National Medical Society
San Diego, CA, -- June 22, 2012 –Baltimore orthopaedic surgeon, Lew C. Schon, MD was installed today as President of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society during the Society’s 28th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. In this position, Schon will also serve on the Board of Directors of the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Outreach & Education Fund (OEF).
“The AOFAS membership is dedicated to advancing patient care of the foot and ankle through research, education and humanitarian efforts. We will continue to move these initiatives forward in the United States and abroad for the Society.” said Schon.
Dr. Schon is Director of Foot and Ankle Services and Director of the Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He is Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University and Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Schon attended Union College and received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. He completed his residency at Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute in New York, and a foot and ankle fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Dr. Schon was an AO Scholar in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
In addition to serving on the AOFAS Board of Directors, Dr. Schon also sits on the Board of Directors of the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Outreach & Education Foundation (OEF). Prior to his election as President-Elect, Dr. Schon also served as Vice President and Treasurer of AOFAS. He has served on the Managerial Board of the journal Foot and Ankle International (FAI), the Post-Graduate Testing Committee, Sports Medicine Committee, Fellowship Training Committee, and the Membership Committee. Dr. Schon is a two time recipient of the prestigious Roger Mann Award and the J. Leonard Goldner Award. He received The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Professor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in May 2012.
Active in several professional societies, Dr. Schon serves on the Corporate Relations Committee of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and the Foot & Ankle Program Subcommittee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He has also authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in the scientific literature, served as an assistant editor for Foot and Ankle International as well as a reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He is a frequent presenter at AOFAS educational programs and faculty member for AOFAS courses, Specialty Day Programs and Annual Meeting programs.
