Traveling Fellowship Program

The Traveling Fellowship Program offers a special opportunity for early-career AOFAS members to attend the AOFAS Annual Meeting and visit leading foot and ankle research and educational institutions. The program is open to AOFAS Active Members, Candidate Members, and International Members who are 45 years old or younger at the time of application. 

At host sites, Traveling Fellows will observe operating rooms, learn new surgical techniques alongside accomplished surgeons, and present their own research and clinical experiences. The program aims to promote professional relationships, exchange ideas, and encourage new thinking on research and clinical care topics.


The 2018 Traveling Fellowship Program will take place July 7-22, 2018. 
Applications for the 2018 program are due December 1, 2017.

 2012 Traveling Fellows

 
The names of the five 2012 Traveling Fellows selected by the AOFAS Awards & Scholarships Committee were announced at the AOFAS Specialty Day Program on February 11, 2012 in San Francisco, California. A record number of applications for the 2012 program was received.
 
The Traveling Fellows attended the AOFAS Annual Meeting 2012 in San Diego, California before setting out on a two-and-a-half week educational experience. They traveled together to visit the following member hosts at their institutions: David B.  2011 Traveling Fellows

 
The AOFAS Awards & Scholarships Committee selected five young members (under age 45) to participate in the 8th annual Traveling Fellowship Program.  The goal of the program is to expose early career foot and ankle surgeons to those established in the field in order to promote professional relationships, exchange ideas and encourage new thinking on research and clinical care topics. 

The names of the 2011 Traveling Fellows were announced at the AOFAS Specialty Day Program on February 19, 2011 in San Diego. The Traveling Fellows attended the 2011 Annual Meeting in Keystone, Colorado and then traveled together to visit the following members at their institutions: Thomas O. Clanton, MD (Vail, Colorado); James W. Brodsky, MD (Dallas, Texas); Jeffrey E. Johnson, MD (St. Louis, Missouri); Steven L. Haddad, MD (Chicago, Illinois); and John G. Anderson, MD and Donald R.  2010 Traveling Fellows

 

Following the AOFAS Annual Summer Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland, the 2010 AOFAS Traveling Fellows logged nearly 1,000 miles traveling to four states, visiting clinics, observing in ORs, giving clinical and research presentations, touring hospitals and labs, learning new clinical and surgical techniques, and networking with renowned surgeons.They even toured the West Wing of the White House, attended a Broadway play, went river rafting in a US National Forest, learned early US history, and enjoyed cooling off at poolside barbeques.
 
Summer Meeting local host Francis McGuigan, MD, provided the fellows with a hometown tour of the nation’s capital. The five international members then began their five-city tour with host Lew Schon, MD, in Baltimore. Next they headed to Philadelphia and spent time with Keith Wapner, MD. Scott Ellis, MD, and Jonathan Deland, MD, served as hosts in New York City. North Carolina included a visit to Durham with James Nunley, II, MD, and Charlotte with Bruce Cohen, MD.

    The 2008 Traveling Fellows began their program at the AOFAS 24th Annual Summer Meeting and Pre-meeting Course in Denver. They traveled together for two and a half weeks, visiting AOFAS members in their teaching and research practices in Chicago, Toronto, Columbus, Houston and Dallas.
