AOFAS Overseas Outreach Project to Vietnam
Application Deadline: December 1, 2010 for 2011 Project
Step up to a challenging experience! You have heard of interesting vacations in Europe, boat cruises through Alaskan waters, mountain climbing, and kayaking in scenic places, however, the AOFAS has an even better adventure in mind for its members. It offers beautiful scenery, foreign language and unusual foods, and involves stepping out of your comfort zone -- both clinically and personally. It also affords the opportunity to do something truly special for others and return home with memories that will last a lifetime. Consider volunteering for the Vietnam project!
Each surgeon spends two weeks working side-by-side with Vietnamese orthopaedic surgeons, seeing patients with deformities and disabilities, performing surgery, and each presents at an annual orthopaedic educational conference in Hanoi. The annual project , scheduled over a four week period in May-early June, provides surgical care in four areas of northern Vietnam and in Hanoi.
The project is open to Active Members, Associate Members - Osteopathic, Candidate Members, and International Members. Surgeons volunteer for two weeks and pay for their own travel to Vietnam. In-country expenses for food, lodging, travel, and logistics support for the AOFAS project are covered by a grant to AOFAS from the Outreach & Education Fund (OEF), the charitable arm of the AOFAS. It is a separate 501(c)(3) organization affiliated with the AOFAS that raises funds to support the Society's mission in advancing education, research, and humanitarian endeavors. It is supported by generous contributions from individuals and corporations.

Two teams each spent two weeks volunteering their services. Team one -- Mark Slovenkai, MD, Ruth Thomas, MD, and Zan Lofgren, AOFAS Executive Director – spent their time in Ba Vi, a village town north of Hanoi, and Hai Phong, a port city located east of Hanoi. Team two – João de Carvalho Neto, MD and Pierce Scranton, MD – spent their time in Vinh, a coastal town south of Hanoi, and Dr. Neto and Naomi Shields, MD spent time in Thai Nguyen, a village located northwest west of Hanoi. Both teams also participated in clinics and operated at Viet Duc Hospital, the large training institution in Hanoi, and visited the orthopaedic departments at local hospitals. The AOFAS surgeons presented at the AOFAS co-sponsored seminar on Surgery of the Lower Extremity in Hanoi.
